How Important are Small
Groups?
At Varsity Bible Church,
we think Small Groups are central! These small communities of people, committed
to walking together, are able to encourage, support, and challenge each other in
their faith journeys in a way that cannot happen in the larger setting on Sunday
mornings. It is also a great place for people who have a common passion to serve
together in a supportive community.
What is a
Small Group?
A Small Group is made up of 10 - 16 people who meet weekly or bi-weekly to
study, share, and support one another in their Christian lives. Groups typically
have a leader or facilitator and meet in someone’s home. Some choose to eat a
meal together. Some choose to participate together in a project that they care
about.
How Long
Does a Group Last?
Each Small Group session
lasts from Fall through June of the next year. At the end of each year, you have
the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group, or even taking a
break. Groups do not meet regularly July through August, though some continue to
meet socially and informally a few times throughout the summer.
Which
Group Should I Join?
We suggest you join a group
based on one of the following: a) your "season in life” - where you share common
interests, backgrounds, marital status or similar-aged children with the other
people in the group; b) your “passion” area – join a common cause group and work
together towards a project that you care about with others who are like-minded;
or c) topical – join a group that is investigating an issue or Biblical topic
that you feel you want to know more about or grow in. Don’t be afraid to try a
group out for a time, and see if it works for you. Honestly, you might have to
try two or three groups before you find the perfect fit but don't worry, you'll
find it!
What is the Required Commitment?
Joining a Small Group
requires a commitment to attend the weekly or bi-weekly meetings. Obviously,
allowances are made for the things that life throws at us - sickness, vacation,
work conflicts, etc. However, we have found that the commitment of attending
every week is important to building and maintaining strong relationships and
healthy groups.
What About
Childcare?
The group you choose to join
will determine what is done about childcare. Some Small Groups offer childcare
as part of their group. Others encourage parents to consider arranging for
childcare at home in which case, families could share a sitter or swap childcare
with another family whose group meets on a different evening or time.
What Will
We Study?
Some of the studies are
based on the previous weekend's sermon. It is a chance for the group to roll up
their sleeves and discuss how the sermon works out in real life. The remainder
of the Small Groups study a variety of other topics related to living the
Christian life.
When and
Where Do These Groups Meet?
Small Groups meet on various
days and nights of the week in homes. Some of them also meet at the church and a
few meet during the daytime.
